![]() ![]() Nazis are fun and rewarding to kill, the missions offer diverse action, and the graphics are first rate. ![]() However, for first-person shooter fans, the ten hours you spend with Allied Assault will be most satisfactory. A pity, because, given the game's cost, more than ten hours of play should be expected. First-person shooters have been distressingly brief lately, perhaps because of increased memory and graphical demands, and Allied Assault is no different. The hard setting demands considerable memorization and repetition, like GoldenEye for the N64, but, sadly (and unlike GoldenEye), the missions remain unchanged. The biggest problem with Allied Assault is its relative brevity most players will finish the game in ten hours on the medium setting. On the rare occasions you can protect them, they stupidly run into enemy fire. The actions and fates of your fellow soldiers are generally predetermined as well. Allied Assault feels scripted, with certain events invariably triggering Nazi reactions. Wolfenstein's Nazis would ignore dead bodies too, although they favored setting ambushes instead of the coordinated attacks found in Allied Assault. Sometimes the Nazis execute well-coordinated attacks, but the dead bodies of guards killed seconds earlier are generally ignored. The AI of enemy soldiers varies considerably depending on the situation. However, after completing the last mission, Allied Assault needs a medal presentation since the conclusion will leave you wondering if you left something unfinished. ![]() Yet, without cut-scenes, the plot advances with a military precision and avoids unnecessary distractions. Perhaps such scripted events are meant to replace the customary pre-mission cut-scenes, which are curiously absent. In one mission an undercover operative - supposedly your on-the-job instructor - is killed right in front of you, forcing you to complete your assignment alone. Two missions also encourage stealth (somewhat reminiscent of the Metal Gear series, although not as well done), which allows a break from the otherwise continuous shooting and sniping.Īllied Assault handles plot development primarily through scripted events that occur regardless of your actions. Much like the D-Day scene in Saving Private Ryan, it's a disorienting and terrifying experience. When the door of your landing craft opens and the enemy machine guns slaughter most of the soldiers around you, it's quite easy to understand why so many people died on 6 June 1944. However, Allied Assault also includes several unforgettable missions, such as a D-Day landing on Omaha Beach. These missions will blur together as you progress, partly because there are so many of them, and partly because of their similarity. All the missions provide plenty of furious and enjoyable killing, but your biggest regret may be the title's relatively short length. Where Return to Castle Wolfenstein establishes an arcane and spooky atmosphere, Allied Assault emphasizes realism, though both are relatively standard shooters. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault's seven multi-level missions traverse the European Theater of WWII you will take out coastal guns in North Africa, scuttle submarines in Norway, and sneak into the heart of Nazi Germany. Electronic Arts has produced another rock solid, if uninspired, first-person shooter for their Medal of Honor series. ![]() ![]() What this page does is highlight some of the best drone kits for enthusiasts. Systems like cooking, considered central not just to the mechanics of the game, but the narrative itself, are confusingly underused. ![]() It is, at times, a little bit bloated - while I have already mentioned how much I enjoy taking my time in this world, there is occasionally an overabundance of cutscenes that, while lively and vital in their own right, can overestimate themselves in terms of engagement. Boss battles are often overly persnickety thanks to the twin-stick shooter combat style and intensely precise counter requirements. Despite how much I appreciate the atmosphere and outlook of its world, I also take issue with quite a lot of its design choices. It would be remiss to talk about Eastward only in terms of what it does well, though. And so, I’ve stopped to smell the post-apocalyptic roses. To storm through it at blistering speed to make a review embargo just felt like I was actively compromising my enjoyment of one of my favourite games of the year. Eastward is surprisingly - if not deceptively - long. All of a sudden, the very thing that makes Eastward so special made sense: I didn’t want to rush. So, this weekend, I started again and was cracked across the skull with a cinder block. Unfortunately, my progress didn’t transfer across to this new build - something that came as quite a surprise considering I had planned my play sessions around the fact that I had, in fact, already been through the vast majority of the game. When I gained access to my preview build, I was able to explore the entire game, so I played through quite a bit of Eastward and waited for the official review build to continue my journey in a newer, more refined version of the game. This brings me to an intriguing part of my review, where I feel obliged to admit that I have yet to actually finish Eastward. To relegate that coherence by stripping it of what makes it coherent would be to do a disservice to what is quite frankly one of 2021’s best and brightest games to date. There is life to its lyricism and vitality to its verbs. When I think about Eastward now, as I write this review, the ideas that endure are tied to its atmosphere, its tone, its mood, its feeling. It is an impressively cohesive experience that would only suffer if it were to be divided into, in this instance, arbitrary items on a stale checklist denoting the top ten quality-affecting factors of what constitutes a ‘good’ game. That is intentional, because playing Eastward is acknowledging and appreciating the sum of its parts. ![]() This might seem like a bit of an unconventional review: I haven’t gotten into the nitty gritty of its relatively robust combat, or waxed lyrical over dungeon design, puzzle variety, or its gorgeous art and wonderfully weird soundtrack. Put plainly, it is extremely clever but never pretentious, despite how ostensibly pretentious my previous sentence might seem. It’s packed with Austenian marital melodrama, Wildean absurdist hyperbole, Dickensian veiled nonsense, and a sense of humour that would give Terry Pratchett a decent ab workout. On the other, this is a world filled with mayors sporting walrus moustaches, photo shoots dedicated to the deity of cheese, and rubber duck monsters who spit spherical duckling bombs at you. On one hand, the events of Eastward transpire in a world where a Matrix-esque human farm is located beneath a train station with a beached and breathing whale on top of it. That subversion is worth expanding on, too. Through it all, however, Eastward remains committed to carving out its own distinct identity, and, for the most part, it succeeds spectacularly. And yes, there will be occasions during which you will feel as if this is something you have seen before. Yes, it will, often and almost brazenly, be comparable to its vast wealth of influences - it even has a minigame called Earth Born with an internal combat system that is remarkably similar to another relatively popular ‘Earth’ game, with all the necessary ‘mother’ lingo that comes with it. It is not the first video game to explore what happens when demagogues replace institutions in the wake of cataclysm, converting history into historiography as survivors become philistines not just by necessity, but by design.Īnd yet Eastward is stunningly original to the point of near overambition. It is not the first video game to juxtapose vibrant colour and vital noise with a thematic core that is much darker. Eastward is not the first video game to pit parent and child against the encroaching apocalypse. ![]() ![]() “Teaching about the Holocaust using books like Maus can inspire students to think critically about the past and their own roles and responsibilities today.” “Maus has played a vital role in educating about the Holocaust through sharing detailed and personal experiences of victims and survivors,” the museum said in a Twitter post. In response to the book’s removal, the US Holocaust Museum said it’s important for students to learn the history described in the novel. “I think they’re so myopic in their focus and they’re so afraid of what’s implied and having to defend the decision to teach ‘Maus’ as part of the curriculum that it lead to this kind of daffily myopic response,” the author said. “You have to really, like, want to get your sexual kicks by projecting on it,” he said. Regarding the nudity, Spiegelman said the image in question was a “tiny image” that depicted his mother being found in a bathtub after she cut her wrists. “I can’t believe the word ‘damn’ would get the book jettisoned out of the school on its own.” “They’re totally focused on some bad words that are in the book,” he said. “I moved past total bafflement to try to be tolerant of people who may possibly not be Nazis, maybe,” the author said, noting it did not appear based on the meeting that the board wanted the book removed because the author was Jewish. “I’m trying to, like, wrap my brain around it,” Spiegelman said on CNN’s “New Day” when asked for his reaction in an interview Thursday. The minutes of the January 10 meeting show McMinn County Director of Schools Lee Parkison addressed the board about the book before voting took place. It depicts Jewish people as mice and Nazis as cats. The novel is intercut with the young author’s attempts to coax the story out of his father as an old man. “Maus” is a graphic novel by Spiegelman, a comic artist, that follows his Jewish parents in 1940s Poland from their early experiences of anti-Semitism to their internment in Auschwitz. Lots of guns have scopes, but instead of looking down them, you look down the side of the weapon, which feels very odd, clunky, and downright unsatisfying. The caveat here is that, for whatever reason, aiming down the sights of your weapons has been curiously left out of first-person mode. Nothing really stuck with me very long after I beat it, though, except maybe those flaming pits filled with dead zombies those might give me nightmares. It’s still good ol’ fashioned face-smashing fun with a few highlights, like when you have to guide and refuel a van through the streets of Rome while under constant undead assault. Aside from the new sights, sounds, and giant flaming pits filled with zombies, there isn’t much to distinguish Italy from other destinations. Rome is the more by-the-numbers of the two: it takes a well-known destination, gives it whatever the opposite of a facelift is, then lets you and your friends blast your way through it for a laugh. It’s rare to see it go beyond the roots of its very clear inspiration, and there’s not a whole lot of variety when it comes to the missions, the special zombies, or the weapons, but what is there works and is enough to fill the Left 4 Dead-shaped hole in all our hearts, for a little while at least. The best way to experience World War Z is to fire up your microphone and find yourself a four-person crew to play through its brief but fun campaign. ![]() ![]() ![]() I visited the Dakota Badlands on the same trip and again, the park was virtually empty. The weather was beautiful but it was an extremely cold day, which meant there were less than a dozen people in the entire park, including the rangers. Everything is a trade-off, but this is a trade-off I'm willing to make. Of course, cold weather does mean the addition of bulky winter clothing and potential battery drain. In winter, biting insects are less likely, as is an encounter with rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouth snakes (not to mention bears, scorpions, spiders, etc.) In summer, I keep hand wipes in my kit to cleanse the greasy film from my hands before touching the gear. If I can avoid them, it's a big plus for me. I don't enjoy the feeling or odor of sunscreen and insect spray, either together or separately. Did I mention that snow is always lovely?Ĭold weather means I don't have to slather my body in a toxic sludge of sunscreen and bug spray. Does this mean I don't enjoy a walk in the park on a beautiful spring day? Of course not! I love spring as much as the next romantic, but, for me, it's less fun to photograph. The landscape has moods, and I love the mood of the winter landscape. I love the ice patterns, raindrops, and structures of the landscape in the middle of winter when it's most exposed. I love the bare bone structure of leafless trees. Which leads me to reason number three.įor me, as a black and white photographer, the winter landscape is just so beautiful. I'm not trying to shoot a vacation postcard I'm trying to convey emotion. Inclement weather, gloomy skies, and barren landscapes also add to the dark mood I look for in my work. Of course, days are shorter in winter, which makes it more important to have those midday hours available for shooting. Soft, cloudy winter light allows me to shoot at any time of day, even midday. This leads to reason number two on why I prefer shooting in winter. Even in summer, northern light is often filtered in a way I rarely see down south. Northern light has a different quality, as does the light in certain other places like New Mexico. Even at the golden hour, the light can still be very contrasty. I was raised in Texas, and I currently live in the southeastern US where summer light can be very harsh - even glaring. There are days with soft light from cloudy skies in summer, they're just less frequent. That gives me much more control over the contrast. Winter light is less direct and winter skies are more likely to be cloudy - even gloomy - which opens shadows and eases highlights. Having said that, I prefer winter light because it's softer. For color photography, shooting in winter is a whole different situation. Remember, I specialize in black and white photography. No mosquitoes, ticks, or snakes (or bears)įirst and foremost, I prefer the light and landscape in winter.I like the mood of the winter landscape.(I also prefer a much more diverse set of subject matter, but that's a topic for another day.) But why would a photographer prefer shooting in winter, when the weather sucks and everything is dead? Here are the top reasons why I prefer photographing the landscape in winter. One of my very distinct departures from the apparent norm, is that I prefer shooting on cloudy, foggy, rainy or otherwise gloomy days, especially in winter. ![]() Sure, I love a beautiful sunset, but as a photographer who specializes in black and white exclusively, I have a different take on things. If the sky is cloudy, or even worse, if there's a fog, the day is a total loss.įor me, landscape photography is a much different experience. Most often, this amounts to hiking up a mountain with a tripod and a backpack full of lenses, filters, and other gadgets with the goal of clicking a few shots of the setting sun.
